Darren and I both have generational roots in agriculture. Our grandparents farmed, our parents hobby farmed. We both grew up raising chickens, pigs and cows and butchering them for our own freezers. It was horses that brought us together. We went to horse 4-H together and our families became friends. Darren and I got married in 2009. We knew early on we were made for each other.
We started farming from the ground up. We worked hard to get a head start. We started with a little 2 acre plot of land. A few animals at a time. A few machinery and material upgrades every year. All while holding down an off farm job. It’s not an easy journey. We wouldn’t do it if we didn’t love the lifestyle so much and love raising our kids this way. We wouldn’t do it if we didn’t believe there’s a better way to grow our food.
We’ve always raised and butchered our own meat. I remember butchering pigs as a little girl. It was a big family affair with several aunts and uncles each butchering their own pig. It was something us kids always looked forward to and eagerly got up for very early in the morning. I can remember distinctly the smells too. We always made an effort to raise or buy a pig raised outdoors. However occasionally someone would purchase a pig raised in a hog barn. You could immediately smell the difference between the pig raised outdoors and the barn raised pig. It matters how our meat is raised. That’s why we raise our animals naturally the way we do. We want to eat clean smelling meat.
We believe in building relationships. We wouldn’t be where we are today without each other. Without family and good friends. Without the fellowship of the body of believers. We believe in love everlasting. We believe in the power of the Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Through him there is forgiveness of sins. There is no one deserving of grace. Grace is God’s gift.
We believe in being good steward’s of the land God has given us. In 2018 we moved onto an 18 acre farm in the Pembina Valley. It was an answer to prayer and so exciting to go from 2 acres to 18 surrounded by bush. We feel so at home here with good friends and neighbors living nearby. In 2021, we moved our farm 1 mile west to an 80 acre farm. We rent some acres here and there and we are so thankful for those opportunities. Our goal is to always leave more in the soil than what we take out. That’s sustainable agriculture.
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord.
He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
Jeremiah 17 : 7 - 8
